How do your belly dance classes work?
Classes run on an ongoing drop-in basis with topics rotated every few weeks. This means that its fine if you miss one or two classes because topics will be repeated every few weeks. This also helps to reinforce the technique in your muscle memory as it will constantly be repeated and refined. In order to keep the classes fresh and exciting, you will encounter familiar moves in new contexts with variations and new combinations being taught.
Do I need to have done belly dancing or any kind of dance before?
The classes are aimed mainly at complete beginners with little or no prior belly dance experience. More experienced dancers will also benefit from revising the basics.
What should I wear to class?
Please wear comfortable clothing similar to what you would wear for a yoga or pilates class. A t-shirt or vest paired with leggings is fine. You can dance bare foot or in soft-soled shoes such as ballet slippers. You can borrow a hip scarf or coin belt to wear in class or bring your own scarf to tie around your hips.
What will I learn in your belly dance classes?
In the weekly drop-in classes you will learn to execute the basic movements of Egyptian style belly dance, developing isolation and muscle control. After attending my classes for a few weeks you can expect to have been introduced to the following fundamental movements of Egyptian style belly dance:
- correct and safe posture for Egyptian belly dance;
- hip and chest circles;
- figure 8s;
- hip drops, chest drops and other percussive movements;
- whole body undulations;
- basic travelling steps;
- complementary hand and arm movements to frame and accentuate the movements.
We will drill these movements to authentic Egyptian music to refine our technique and practise short combinations and choreographies to improve our musicality.
